:  any of the small channels in bone that transmit blood vessels from the periosteum into the bone and that lie perpendicular to and communicate with the haversian canals

Biographical Note for VOLKMANN'S CANAL

Volk·mann \ˈflk-ˌmän\ Alfred Wilhelm (1800–1877), German physiologist. Volkmann held a succession of academic posts in Germany, serving variously as professor of zoology, physiology, pathology, and anatomy. His description of the canals in compact bone which transmit blood vessels from the periosteum was published in 1863; the canals are now known as Volkmann's canals.
